In passive transport, substances move from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration in a process called diffusion. Passive transport is the movement of molecules from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration without the use of energy. There are at least four main types of passive transport which are important to cells because they move materials of small molecular weight across membranes. Transport across a cell membrane is a tightly regulated process, because cell function is highly dependent on maintain strict concentrations of various molecules. When a molecule moves down its concentration gradient is it participating in passive transport; moving up the concentration gradient requires energy making it active transport. Passive transport is the transport of any molecules which does not require any energy.

Medan den passiva transporten inte kräver någon energi är en förutsättning för att den aktiva transporten skall fungera att energi används. Diffusionen över ett cellmembran kräver ingen energi och processen kallas därför för passiv transport.

Passive transport

Passive transport is a naturally occurring phenomenon and does not require the cell to expend energy to accomplish the movement. In passive transport, substances move from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration in a process called diffusion. Passive transport is defined as movement of a solute from a region of high electrochemical potential on one side of the cell membrane to a region of lower electrochemical potential on the opposite side. From: Cell Physiology Source Book (Fourth Edition), 2012 Definition of passive transport : the movement of substances (as by diffusion) across a cell membrane without the expenditure of energy — compare active transport First Known Use of passive transport 1953, in the meaning defined above Passive Transport: Osmosis Osmosis is the diffusion of water through a semipermeable membrane according to the concentration gradient of water across the membrane. Whereas diffusion transports material across membranes and within cells, osmosis transports only water across a membrane and the membrane limits the diffusion of solutes in the water. Passive transport is the movement of molecules or ions from an area of higher to lower concentration. There are multiple forms of passive transport: simple diffusion, facilitated diffusion, filtration, and osmosis.
